VULCAIN is a three-years research project funded by the french National Research Agency (ANR), began in 2007. It aims at studying the impact of combined climate and socio-economic changes on regional hydrosystems. The partners of the project are BRGM (coordinator, Y. Caballero), BRL Ingénierie (JM. Citeau), the Hydrosciences laboratory (HSM) from Montpellier University (L.Neppel) and the resarch department of Méteo France (E. Martin)

The VULCAIN project aims at studying the impacts of climate and socio-economic changes on the hydrosystems exploited for water supply purposes, at short (2020-2040) and middle-term (2040-2060). The study zone is a department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, south of France, with typical Mediterranean climate, hydrosystems and water management strategies. For this purpose, hydrological and hydrogeological modelling tools will be forced by future climate and socio-economic scenarios, built from state-of-art climate models used for the last IPCC report and from prospective studies. This integrated analysis will allow describing the future vulnerability of both the hydrosystems and the territory (in terms of water supply).
